The Municipality of Lavreotiki covers the South-Eastern tip of the Attica peninsula and was instituted under the law Ν.3852/2010 (Kallikratis Programme) after the consolidation of the previously existing municipalities of Lavreotiki, Keratea and the community of Ag. Konstantinos. The area coverage of the newly created municipality, which includes the islands of Patroclos and Ag. Andreas, is 179,18 sq. km and its population according to the 2011 census of population is 24.883 residents. The municipality’s seat is the town of Lavrio.
The entire area of Lavreotiki consists an open-air museum that bears witness of its diachronic history. The crown – jewel of the region is the Temple of Neptune in Cape Sounion that dominates the tip of the sacred rock, overlooking the Aegean sea.
At the feet of the Velatouri hills, in the region of ancient Thoriko, no more than 2 km from the city of Lavrio, is maintained, despite obvious damages, the oldest existing theater in Greece and possibly also the oldest in the world.
Shortly before reaching the theatre, in the area of Ovriocastro, there are traces of prehistoric activities preserved only because of the struggle of the citizens of the area to avert the installation of a new waste disposal facility.
Almost the whole area is designated as a region of outstanding natural beauty and characterized as a historic site, whereas the National Park of Sounio prevails above all. With its many paths, its rare bio-diversity and the numerous abandoned mining shafts, the area is excellent for educational as well as recreational tours. In effect, alternative tourism has become an emerging source of income in the area.
Last but not least, one should mention the Industrial inheritance of Lavrio, always present in Lavrio’s Technological andCultural park, an area of 25.000 sq. m., the mining facilities, the industrial monuments and museums.
The extensive coastline of the Municipality of Lavrio offers crystal clear waters from the Kakia Thalassa area to Harakas and Legrena.
Moreover, the towns of Lavrio and Keratea consist active pillars of culture, organizing annually a wide variety of initiatives and events, despite the crisis plaguing the country, with the support of the active folklore groups and cultural associations of the area. Especially in the summertime, when the area is flood in visitors and seasonal residents, the Summer Festival, renamed as “Thorikia” after Kallikratis’ law, is held annually from June until September, covering a wide range of artistic expression.
Furthermore, the Municipality organizes major athletic events, such as the “Posidonia” cross country endurance race, whereas it has hosted in the past the 12th gymnastics festival of Attica, showing a record of participations at that time. In addition, mass sports programmes, covering most of the existing sports, are held in the in-doors athletic facilities of both the cities of Lavrio and Keratea, while significant distinctions are attained in the tournaments by the local sports clubs. Towards this direction, we not only maintain the existing sports’ infrastructures, but we also add new ones, such as the Keravnos beach-volley training and game facilities’ in Keratea.
The municipal social policy consists a responsible, continuous and scientifically driven municipal intervention, according to which the Municipality equally addresses and serves all vulnerable groups.
With great effort we maintain two social services’ units that relieve over 250 citizens having obtained the extension of the funding of “Assistance at home” programme and the “Elderly Daycare Center” in Keratea.
Furthermore, the Municipality of Lavrio, in collaboration with the Blood Bank of Keratea and the University Clinic of Eginitio Hospital, participates to a “Tele Psycho Geriatrics” programme which aims to early diagnose and effectively treat depression and dementia symptoms. In addition, the Municipality of Lavrio in collaboration with the Blood Bank of Keratea provides pharmaceutical treatment to children with no health insurance and free mammographic examinations to hundreds of women.
In addition, we systematically monitor and participate in programmes that aim to support and help the unemployed people of our area, in an attempt to provide viable solutions and vision to our younger citizens. At the same time we remove the financial burden of more than 100 of our citizens, unable to pay the municipal kindergartens’ fees, by participating in programmes that cover these expenditures on their behalf.
Moreover, following the disbandment of the local tax office in Lavrio, we were able to achieve the establishment of a new taxpayers’ service office in the city in order to ensure the improvement of the services delivered to our citizens.
We strongly believe that since we are all living in financially uncertain times, with unpleasant consequences for a large share of our society, we must all adapt to the new era, demanding more and more from the central government.
